Installation Instructions

Before You Begin:

  1. Inspect Substructure: Ensure that the deck’s substructure is structurally sound, level, and properly built according to local building codes
  2. Check Surface: Verify that the deck surface is clean, dry, and free from debris, dirt, and any obstructions that may interfere with the installation process.
  3. Gather Materials: Gather all necessary materials and tools for the installation, including Compo-Deck composite decking boards, fascia boards, clips, fasteners, screws, and spacers.

Installation Steps:

  1. Layout and Planning:
    • Determine the layout and orientation of the decking boards, taking into account any patterns or designs desired.
    • Start installation from the outer edge of the deck and work inward, ensuring proper alignment and spacing between boards at 5 millimetres.
  2. Substructure Preparation:
    • Ensure that the joists are properly spaced at 300 millimetres.
    • Use double joists or blocking for butt joints and perimeter framing to provide additional support and stability.
  3. Fastening:
    • Use Compo-Deck approved fasteners or screws for installation of decking material and substructure.
    • Install fasteners at each joist location, ensuring they penetrate the decking material and secure it firmly to the substructure.
    • Use spacers or decking clips to maintain consistent spacing between boards at 5 millimetres for expansion and contraction.
  4. Trimming and Finishing:
    • Trim any excess material from the ends of the decking boards using a circular saw or miter saw, ensuring clean, straight cuts.
    • Install Compo-Deck fascia boards or trim pieces around the perimeter of the deck to provide a finished look and conceal exposed edges.
  5. Expansion Gaps:
    • Leave adequate gaps between boards and at the ends of boards to allow for expansion and contraction due to temperature changes.
    • Use a Breaker boards to minimise expansion at the ends of the boards. Breaker boards are installed to run perpendicular at the ends of the boards minimising expansion.
    • Leave between 3 to 5 millimetres between the end of the boards and the Breaker boards
  6. Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Periodically clean the deck surface with mild soap and water to remove dirt, debris, and any stains. Use a soft-bristle brush or sponge for gentle cleaning.
    • Inspect the deck regularly for signs of damage, such as cracks, chips, or discoloration, and address any issues promptly to maintain the integrity and appearance of the deck.
  7. Warranty Coverage:
    • Review the limited warranty statement for specific limitations. Failure to follow recommended installation practices may void warranty coverage, so it’s essential to adhere to the guidelines provided.
  8. Professional Consultation:
    • If you encounter any challenges during the installation process or have questions about specific details, consult a professional contractor or Compo-Deck representative for expert guidance and assistance.

Maintenance:

While Compo-Deck requires less maintenance than wood, it is still important to perform routine upkeep to ensure its longevity and appearance. Here are some maintenance tips:

  1. Regular Cleaning: Periodically clean the deck surface with a mild detergent and water to remove dirt, debris, and mildew. Use a soft-bristle brush or sponge to scrub the surface gently.
  2. Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surface of the decking. Stick to gentle, environmentally friendly cleaning solutions whenever possible.
  3. Preventative Measures: Place furniture pads or protective mats under heavy furniture to prevent scratching or indentations on the decking surface. Do not braai or use a fire pit on the deck to avoid damage from heat sources.
  4. Inspect Regularly: Inspect the deck regularly for signs of damage, such as cracks, chips, or stains. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and maintain the integrity of the decking.
  5. Annual Inspection: Perform an annual inspection of the entire deck, including the substructure and fasteners, to ensure everything is in good condition. Make any necessary repairs or replacements as needed.
